Nature in the city

Nature in the city

Not only is Den Helder characterised by several nature reserves close by, nature is now also flowing into the city itself and finding a home in many different green initiatives in the city districts.

Stelling van Den Helder
The Stelling van Den Helder - the Defence Line of Den Helder - was built around 1811/1812 by Napoleon to protect the Nieuwe Werk careenage initially, and the Willemsoord National Shipyard in subsequent years. The Defence Line is a network of forts dating from the Napoleonic era, which are connected by strong walls. Nowadays, the Defence Line forms a green ribbon through Den Helder and is worth a visit from a cultural and ecological perspective. More information about this beautiful part of Den Helder can be found here: www.stellingdenhelder.nl.

Allotments
Allotments are located in several places in Den Helder and Julianadorp. An allotment is a private garden that is not attached to a personal residence. There are five allotment societies: Amateur Tuin Vereniging Rijksweg ATVRijksweg, vereniging van volkstuinhouders 'De Razende Bol', de amateurtuindersvereniging Texelstroom, Volkstuinvereniging Tuindorp and amateurtuindersvereniging Ooghduyne.

Parks in Den Helder
