Bird

Injured after flying into a window
What if you find a bird that has flown into a window?
Proceed as follows:

  1. Look carefully to see if the bird has any visible injuries (look for blood or a strange position of the wings or beak).
  2. If you see no visible injuries, carefully move the bird to a safe place.
What if you can’t find a safe place outside? Then put the bird in a box with a cloth over it.
Put the box in a quiet, dark place, such as the bathroom or shed.
  3. Check the bird after 1 1/2 hours, in most cases it will be active again and can fly away by itself.
  4. If the bird is still dazed after 2 to 3 hours,
bring it to our sanctuary in a box with a cloth over it.

Attacked by a cat or dog
What if the bird you have found has been bitten by a dog or cat?
Bring the bird to the sanctuary as soon as possible! The bird urgently needs antibiotics.
If they are not administered within 6 hours, the animal will still die from its injuries.

  • Put the animal in a box as soon as possible (do it with gloves on or wrap the bird in a towel).
  • Put a towel over the box: in the dark, birds feel less stressed and are not so afraid.
  • Never give it water or food, the animal is in shock and may choke!

Injured by a vehicle
What if the bird you have found has been injured by traffic, e.g. has been hit by a car?
Bring the bird to the sanctuary as soon as possible! Our animal carers can immediately assess what help is needed.

  • Put the animal in a box as soon as possible (do it with gloves on or wrap the bird in a towel).
  • Put a towel over the box: in the dark, birds feel less stressed and are not so afraid.
  • Never give it water or food, the animal is in shock and may choke!

Large injured birds (birds of prey, waterfowl, herons)
Have you found a large adult bird with an injury? Do not try to do anything yourself. Instead, call the animal ambulance immediately: +31 (0)651697115.
Under stress, large birds use all the means at their disposal to protect themselves: beaks, claws or wings, and can seriously injure the people trying to help them. So leave the transport of large injured birds to the animal ambulance.

Caught in a fishing line
Have you found a bird entangled in a fishing line, twisted around a leg for example?
Do not try to do anything yourself. Instead, call the animal ambulance immediately: +31 (0)651697115.
